I was given an old mower, but I can't get it to start. I want to tune it up, but I am not sure what oil to use or spark plug to buy. Since it was given to me, I am not sure what the engine specs are.
it's a Craftman 2 mower. Model 944 369230, serial 002388
Any suggestions?

Just inherited this - it was working until the spring and am sure it will work now - but know one knows how to start it, I know from watching gramps you pull the thing under the petrol tank, fiddle with the little roung thing on the engine - twiddle the lever on the handle bars - let it run them fiddle with the little round thing again and then pull back on the hanndle bar thinging and then off your go mowing - can anyone out there give me a clear 1 2 3 of what to do? Thanks I really appreciate it

Hi there this may be some help to you,If you go onto youtube you may find some videos of people with your mowers.I found a few"how to start" videos for atcos and qualcasts so you may be able to adapt from these vids(they all work on a similar principle. Failing that you could always just play around and work it out, that makes it a little more fun,Just keep your hands out of the way of any harm, You wont damage the mower so dont fear it

Hi all, I have a Dennis Z type 30" with the seat roller and grass bucket, the bucket looks like it was a 36" ransome cut down and the roller also looks like a ransome, anyway the engine was partly seized, so pulled it out and the engine is painted and fixed ready to run, i did ask dennis for info but they did not bother to get back to me, I need two bits of information, the age of the mower and are any decal's avalable for the grass bucket, numbers 172Z23, 3015E140, thanks.

Hi, Hoping some kind soul may have a service manual or know of where one can be obtained? I do have some photos of it and believe the engine to be a JAP Model 0 Type 28 The mower is a 12" Cut Having great difficulty starting it using a 40:1 mix for the fuel. Plug is clean and gapped to 20 thou with healthy spark.
On the verge of stripping it down but would prefer to get as much info as possible first.
Thanks
Miles

Hi there, I just joined the club, looks good!
I am about to start a full nut & bolt rebuild of the mower in the link below, including a full rebuild of the engine etc,
http://www.jimmcglynn.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/mower1/
There is no build plate on the mower nor on the engine, so it's hard to pinpoint it properly.
After some investigation I am guessing the following, - the mower is an ATCO Lightweight from the late 50's - the engine is a Villiers Mk7 4 stroke. - the Carb is a Zenith 13 TCA-2 (there are markings on the carb, so I know this to be true)
Do you concurr?
Do you happen to have any manuals (or similar, such as parts list, pictures) for either the mower or the engine that you could send me?
Many thanks in advance,

Hello! It doesn't seem very active on this forum I'm afraid.
Yeah, I agree, something to do with the carb. The Zenith carb on my one was really easy to strip and rebuild. Took about an hour or two. Remember the current position of the mixture srew/float screw etc incase you don't know the correct mixture setting.

I have a 1960 Qualcast Commodore, which I am just finishing restoring. I am desperately seeking a photograph or picture of the oblong "Qualcast" badge, which is located on the handlebars cross-over joint. I have photographed mine and am currently editing the picture, to make a new transfer, but I am unsure about the exact shape of the "Q" as there is too much missing. Any help would be gratefully received. ps. I have already tried scouring the web without success. Thanks in advance David

Hi.
I've recently bought a late 60s Commodore, and it has its original badges. The one on the grass box is worn, but the rest are in good condition. Fabulous mower. My parents had one new in the early 60s, but sadly it got chucked onto the skip in the early 80s. I always missed that old mower, and when I spotted this one, I was not going to miss out!

I am trying to repair and restore a horse pulled mowing machine. I have the info off the frame and parts but i can't find a form or blog anywhere that can give me any info on the age , color and where i may find parts. I went to the BF Avery & sons site and blog but that site is so dead the last post before mine was 4 months ago. The info is in raised letters on different places. BF Avery & Sons / Champion / AA1165 / AC1221 / AB1188. Ant thing to point me in the right direction would be great and i am really wanting to know the age. Thanks God Bless
